Three bands, none fronted the usual way. Squid's singer shouts from behind the kit. Black Country, New Road share the microphone between three songwriters. Aidan Moffat barely sings, speaking Arab Strap's lines against the noise. Nobody standing where the singer should be.

'Resolution Square' is under a minute of scene-setting noise before 'G.S.K.' lurches in on a heavy bassline and a yelped vocal. Squid build tension like a machine. 'Narrator' runs past eight minutes, the motorik groove locking tighter while a second voice climbs into screams. 'Paddling' opens on drum-machine hi-hats, then live drums take over at a quicker clip. Brass drifts through 'Documentary Filmmaker', and the middle of the record breathes. 'Pamphlets' closes it: eight minutes of pounding repetition that refuses to let go.

'Besties' opens bright and bouncing, piano and violin skipping along under a clear, unhurried voice. That sets the tone. Three different singers take turns at the front, and the band rearranges itself around each one. Recorders, banjo and flute turn up where you'd expect guitars. 'The Big Spin' leans on piano and close harmony. 'For The Cold Country' is the long haul, more than six minutes that keep gathering weight. 'Goodbye (Don't Tell Me)' brings it home quietly.

'I Get Noise' opens heavy, crunching riffs and clattering drums with a saxophone running loose over the top. 'You You You' starts on a single synth figure and keeps stacking until it's something you could dance to. The spoken voice stays dry and close throughout, pressed right up against the noise. 'Fighting For You' stomps. 'Basic Physics' reaches for the back of a big room. Then 'Under Offer' drops almost everything for a ghostly piano and a voice. Fourteen tracks, nearly an hour, and the contrasts are the point.
